San José Cathedral, located in front of Central Park in La Antigua Guatemala, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Its original construction began in 1545 and it was consecrated in 1680. Over the centuries, the cathedral suffered severe damage from earthquakes, particularly those in 1717 and 1773—the latter known as the Santa Marta earthquake—which led to its partial destruction. Despite this, its façade was rebuilt and today, along with its impressive ruins, it reflects the grandeur of colonial architecture. The cathedral remains an active Catholic church where Mass is regularly celebrated, while also serving as a site of great cultural, historical, and spiritual significance, inviting visitors to explore its past and admire its beauty.
