The Capuchinas Convent is one of the most fascinating and unique architectural complexes in La Antigua Guatemala. Inaugurated in 1736, it was the last convent built for nuns during the colonial period and stands out for its innovative architectural design.
Its most distinctive feature is the remarkable circular tower, made up of small individual cells surrounding a central courtyard, considered one of the earliest “apartment-style” structures in the Americas. Despite the damage caused by the 1773 earthquakes, much of the convent remains intact, allowing visitors to explore its corridors, patios, and spaces that reflect monastic life of the time.
Located just a few blocks from the Santa Catalina Arch, the Capuchinas Convent is a must-visit for those interested in history, architecture, and a unique glimpse into colonial religious life.
